“What hydraulic fluid does my log splitter use?” sounds like a simple product question, but the reliable answer is model-specific. The goal is to find the exact fluid specification, service quantity and temperature guidance for the machine you own rather than apply one universal oil recommendation.
The rule that prevents the most expensive mistake
Use the exact splitter manual/specification for fluid type. “Hydraulic fluid” and “hydraulic oil” are search terms, not one universal product specification. Do not select fluid from reservoir size, tonnage, brand color or what another splitter uses.

Total hydraulic-system capacity helps plan service quantity but does not tell you what fluid to use.
Reservoir/tank capacity can differ from total system capacity because hoses, cylinder and other components also hold fluid.
Filter type/interval is another exact-model service item. Replacing fluid does not automatically mean every machine uses the same filter.
The production data contain capacity fields for many current machines, but not a normalized universal fluid-type field. That is intentional: capacity is safe to compare when published, while the exact approved fluid should be read from the current manual.

A blank capacity means the current normalized record does not verify that field; it does not mean zero fluid.
Hydraulic systems can feel slower when fluid is cold because viscosity changes and the entire system has not reached operating temperature. That does not justify bypassing the manufacturer's fluid specification or raising hydraulic pressure. Follow the exact cold-weather/start-up guidance in the manual.
If the splitter remains slow after normal warm-up, the issue may involve fluid level/condition, filter restriction, pump wear, valve behavior, engine/motor speed or cylinder leakage. Those belong to diagnosis, not a blanket “use thinner oil” recommendation.
Fluid level and condition are useful inspection clues, but color alone does not identify an approved fluid specification. Milky/cloudy fluid can suggest water contamination; persistent foam/aeration can suggest air entering the circuit or an incorrect level/return condition; visible metal/debris deserves investigation before fresh fluid is treated as the complete repair.
Likewise, dark fluid does not by itself prove a specific failure. Service history, smell/heat exposure, contamination and the manufacturer's interval/inspection guidance matter. If the fluid specification is unknown, do not “top off” with a guessed product just to restore the sight level.
Drain points, fill procedure, cylinder position, filter service, bleeding/air-removal and final level checks are model-specific. A generic step-by-step drain procedure can be wrong for a machine whose manufacturer requires a different beam/cylinder position or service sequence. Those phrases are often used loosely in searches, but the product specification still has to match the exact manual. Do not assume two fluids are interchangeable because both use “hydraulic” in the name.

Cold fluid can increase resistance and change system behavior, but persistent slowness should be diagnosed using the exact manual rather than solved by an unverified fluid substitution.
