Choose electric when the outlet is an advantage, not a constraint

Electric makes the cleanest ownership case when splitting happens near a suitable branch circuit and the machine can reach the work without violating the exact manufacturer's extension-cord guidance. You avoid a gasoline engine, fuel storage and carburetor-related seasonal issues. The current corded electric hydraulic catalog also stays relatively compact compared with full-size towable gas machines.

The tradeoff is that all nine current corded electric records are horizontal-only. If the rounds are heavy enough that beam-height lifting is the real problem, choosing a larger electric tonnage may not solve the workflow.

Choose gas when mobility or full-size handling matters

Gas earns its extra maintenance when it removes a meaningful constraint: work far from household power, road transport, vertical loading of heavy rounds or access to the broader 20–40 ton full-size class. Current gas records also include both very fast and relatively slow cycles, so “gas” is not itself a throughput guarantee.

Gas is less compelling when the splitter never leaves a powered work area and the extra engine, fuel and storage requirements do not buy you vertical handling or mobility you actually use.

How heavy are the rounds?

The harder the rounds are to lift, the more valuable horizontal/vertical gas designs become. Force and handling should be evaluated separately.

How much engine maintenance do you want?

Gas adds service and fuel-system tasks. Pay that cost only when the gas platform solves a power, transport or handling problem.

How much wood do you process?

Higher annual volume increases the value of cycle time, loading workflow and service access. It does not automatically make gas the winner.
