Electric splitters are most useful when the work stays near suitable power and the machine fits the rounds you actually handle. The decision is less about finding the largest electric tonnage label and more about balancing circuit requirements, cycle time, log size, horizontal-only handling and annual workload.

When electric makes sense

Electric is strongest when splitting happens near suitable household power, storage space is limited, fuel-system maintenance is undesirable and the workload does not require the remote mobility or broad full-size force range of gas machines.

Electric is a power-source decision, not just a lower-tonnage decision

The current catalog contains 9 corded electric hydraulic models from Boss Industrial, SuperHandy, YARDMAX and WEN. Published force runs from 5 to 16 tons, but that spread should not be read as a universal wood-size formula. The useful boundary is whether the actual rounds, grain difficulty and annual workload fit a horizontal electric workflow near a compatible outlet.

Best fit

Homeowners splitting near power, moderate annual volume, smaller-to-medium rounds, simpler maintenance priorities and storage where a full-size towable gas unit is unnecessary.

Main constraint

Every current corded electric hydraulic record in the catalog is horizontal-only. Large rounds that are difficult to lift can therefore become a handling problem before advertised force becomes the only issue.

Speed varies

Published full-cycle times in the current electric hydraulic set range from 13 seconds to 20 seconds where available, so two machines with similar electrical requirements can have noticeably different repeated-work pace.

Power details matter

Current models commonly publish 115–120 V and 12–15 A requirements. Do not assume every household outlet, branch circuit or extension cord is appropriate just because the plug physically fits.

Household circuits and extension cords

Electrical compatibility is model-specific. The current Boss ED10T20 and ED16T21 records publish a 20-amp recommended circuit, while several other models publish voltage and amperage without a separate circuit recommendation. YARDMAX currently publishes extension-cord guidance on its electric models: the normalized record captures a 30-foot maximum and 12-gauge minimum where that manufacturer guidance is explicit.

That is why this site does not publish one universal extension-cord rule for every electric splitter. Longer and undersized cords can increase voltage drop, but the correct planning step is to follow the exact manual and circuit requirement for the model you are considering rather than substituting a generic chart.

The YARDMAX YS0650 remains in the current catalog, but its current manufacturer page has a force-label discrepancy between page/title content and the specification table. Use the manufacturer source before treating its advertised-force field as settled.

Where electric stops being the obvious choice

Electric becomes less attractive when you must split far from suitable power, when lifting heavy rounds onto a horizontal beam is the dominant problem, or when repeated high-volume work makes a broader range of towable horizontal/vertical machines more useful. That is the point to compare gas log splitters, not simply jump to the highest electric tonnage available.

The kinetic page is intentionally separate. The current RYOBI 40V kinetic machine is electrically powered, but its flywheel/kinetic mechanism and 2-second published cycle create a different decision than a corded hydraulic splitter.

Frequently asked questions

Are electric log splitters strong enough for hardwood?

Some electric models can handle many hardwood rounds, but species name alone is not enough. Diameter, grain, knots, moisture condition and the exact model's published capacity all matter.

Do I need a 20-amp circuit for an electric log splitter?

Not every model publishes the same requirement. Some current Boss models in the catalog recommend a 20-amp circuit, while other models publish voltage and amperage without the same circuit note. Follow the exact manual.

Can I use an extension cord with an electric log splitter?
