How Log Splitter Match Works
The Matcher is a deterministic decision-support system built on normalized current product records. It first classifies the job, then applies documented hard constraints, then scores the remaining products. Match Score and Data Confidence stay separate so richer documentation cannot masquerade as better suitability.
Use the Matcher with this methodology in mind
The tool is designed to narrow the decision—not certify that a particular machine will split every log or satisfy every local towing, electrical, tractor or warranty requirement.
Step 1: classify the job before looking at products
The first output is a practical hydraulic tonnage range. The classification rises as the entered job becomes more demanding across five dimensions: species tendency, maximum round diameter, moisture condition, grain/knot difficulty and annual workload.

Current planning bands
The internal classification maps the combined difficulty profile into these broad decision bands. These are not manufacturer ratings and are not guarantees of log performance.

Step 2: apply documented hard constraints
Products that fail a requirement with current documented evidence are not allowed to recover simply by earning points elsewhere.
- Electric-only, gas-only or tractor-only requirement conflicts with the product's power system.
- Vertical operation is required but the model is documented as horizontal-only.
- Entered maximum log length exceeds the manufacturer's published maximum.
- Entered round diameter exceeds a manufacturer-published maximum diameter envelope.
- Road transport is required but the manufacturer explicitly documents the model as not road-towable.
- Tow-behind property use is required but the model is explicitly documented as non-towable.
Unknown is not a hard failure. If the source does not publish a field, that absence affects Data Confidence or creates a tradeoff note instead of being converted into “no.”
Step 3: calculate Match Score
Only products that survive the hard-constraint check are scored. The current launch weighting totals 100 points:

Price is not a scoring component. If the visitor chooses an optional observed-price cap, it is applied after suitability. Affiliate availability is not a scoring component or tie-breaker either.
Strong Match, Possible Match and Not Recommended
Strong Match
Generally 80+ Match Score, no documented hard failure, and no critical unknown that directly affects the selected use case.
Possible Match / Tradeoff
A product remains technically plausible but carries a class, cycle, handling, transport or evidence compromise. Important unknowns can keep a high-scoring product out of the Strong tier.
Not Recommended for this input
A documented hard mismatch exists, the score is materially weak, or the only current observed price exceeds a visitor-selected post-suitability budget cap.
Held from automated scoring
The product record exists, but a critical current-source conflict makes automated matching inappropriate until the evidence is reconciled.
Data Confidence is deliberately separate
Data Confidence asks: how complete and strong is the evidence for the fields this particular visitor needs? It does not ask whether the machine is a better fit.
For example, cycle time becomes a relevant confidence field when throughput matters. Towing evidence becomes relevant when road transport matters. Voltage evidence becomes relevant for an electric-only search. A product can therefore have a high Match Score but only Moderate Data Confidence when a relevant specification is unpublished.
Manufacturer product pages/manuals receive full evidence credit in the current implementation. A current exact-model retailer source used only where the manufacturer does not publish a field receives reduced credit. Missing data reduces confidence but is never turned into a numeric zero specification.
How result order is determined
Current results are ordered by Match Score first. If two products tie, the Matcher uses closeness to the planning-range midpoint for hydraulic products and then stable brand/model ordering. Data Confidence, observed price, affiliate availability, merchant status and commission are deliberately not tie-breakers.
Only the top current matches are displayed to keep the result set useful. The underlying Matcher still evaluates every production record marked eligible.
Kinetic products are not hydraulic-tonnage equivalents
A kinetic machine's advertised tonnage is not inserted directly into the hydraulic class score. The current kinetic path evaluates the manufacturer's published log envelope, grain profile, workload and speed priority separately. This allows a fast current kinetic product to surface for the work it actually documents without implying that “12-ton kinetic = 12-ton hydraulic” as a universal rule.
Current catalog holds
Two current production records are deliberately withheld from automated matching:
- Boss Industrial 3PT16T21: the current exact page conflicts on advertised force and hydraulic-flow guidance.
- YARDMAX YS0650: the current page/H1 and specification table conflict on advertised splitting force, with an additional feature-description conflict.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum Match Score?
The maximum is 100 points: 40 for class suitability, 20 for workload/cycle fit, 15 for power-source fit, 10 for handling/orientation, 10 for portability and 5 for handling-support features.
Is budget part of Match Score?
No. A selected budget is applied after suitability is scored. Observed price is volatile and incomplete, so it cannot increase or decrease the editorial Match Score.
How is Data Confidence calculated?
Data Confidence checks whether fields relevant to the visitor's inputs are actually known and source-backed. Manufacturer evidence receives full credit; current retailer documentation used for a missing manufacturer field receives lower credit; unpublished fields reduce confidence without becoming zero-valued specifications.
Why are some catalog products excluded from the Matcher?
A product can be held from automated scoring when current sources conflict on a critical field. The record may remain in the research catalog, but the Matcher does not guess through unresolved force, hydraulic or other decisive conflicts.
